Super Bowl Renowned Champions 1967-2010Written by MKAfter the merging of the AFL and the NFL in 1966, and their re-alignment in 1970 to present day, a large parade of teams has claimed the Vince Lombardi trophy since the creation of the Super Bowl. Some more than others, but the list keep growing. Until now, 18 teams have won the Super Bowl at least once, but some have taken the crown of victory more than just once. Lets take a small peek at history. With the victory claimed this last 2011 Super Bowl XLV by the Green Bay Packers, is hard to ignore that they were the first to win it in 1967. Watching the records and the numbers of every team that has achieved victory over the years and how the sport has maintained a faithful community of Fans through the years; make us think that there's still a lot of Super Bowl for the future generations and many champions to come. In 1967 Green Bay Packers won the first Super Bowl representing the National Football League (NFL) against Kansas City Chiefs who were representing the American Football League (AFL) in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. A year later, Packers won again, this time against Oakland Raiders. The two years that follow were won by AFL teams, The New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs. These first four Super Bowls were considered intra league. With a number of equal victories for each league, in 1970, both leagues merge and the NFL World Championship was born. As part of the merge both leagues changed their names to National Football Conference NFC and American Football Conference AFC. Also, 3 teams from the pre-merger NFL were transferred to the AFC to make both conferences even with 13 teams, with each conference being split in 3 divisions. Since then, the NFC leads with 24-21 championship victories over the AFC. Before the Super Bowl; both conferences won 2 World Championships as NFL and AFL each.A funny detail; the AFC holds the team with most victories in their rooster, the Pittsburgh Steelers counts 6-2 Super Bowl championships, followed by he Dallas Cowboys with 5-3 and San Francisco 49ers with a perfect 5-0. The maximum number of Super Bowls won by a team is 2, and only seven has achieved that honor; The Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and the New England Patriots; the Steelers has achieved this feat in two occasions. The Green Bay Packers is considered the team with most titles during the whole NFL history, counting 9 titles pre-Super Bowl and are 4 Super Bowl. The Pittsburgh Steelers hold 6, and all of them were claimed inside the Super Bowl era since 1970. The Super Bowl became the seal of a long and lasting union between two leagues in sports history. |
